Things Hares Need To Do When Setting a Hash!

When setting a hash run, other than having lots of fun, there area few things that Hares must do, and be reminded of:

  1. If you have never set a trail and would like to set a trail let the Hare Raiser know by sending an email to iwanttohare@vh3.ca, and he/she may be able to team you up with a more seasoned hasher to co-Hare with you. You can also ask around to see if any of the old-fart hashers would like to set a trail, and especially if you are not an old-fart you might be able to take advantage of their expertise, and they your enthusiastic energy.

  2. Hasher cost are fixed at $10.00 a head and covers all of the hash expenses. This is collected by the Hash Cash, or can be collected by the Hare or another Mismanagement member, but must end up with the Hash Cash. Virgins do not pay for their first hash. Normal expenses are for 2 beer per hound, down-down, flour, chalk, cooler, ice, and all or portion of any additional treats and non-beer drink stop costs. The cost of any additional extras, such as food and non-beer check drinks, come out of this $10 fee. These additional 'extras' must be approved by the Mismanagement in advance of event - send an email to iwanttohare@vh3.ca. The fee may be increase where the cost are not likely to cover by it.

  3. The Hare is responsible for contacting the VH3's Beermeister/Quartermeister (email vh3beermeister@vh3.ca) to aranger getting the flour, beer, washable plastic cups, etc. for their hash. The Quartermeister will have some bags, and maybe some handly things like old water bottles to help 'write' trail symbold in flour. Only purchase beer if you know that the hash has no beer, and the Beermeister says too.  This goes for ciders, cooler, etc.

  4. If you are arranging a restaurant/pub for the on-after, it is a particularly good idea to book ahead to avoid disappointments. Often seasoned hares will get a show of hands as the last thing done at the circle-up before the beginning of the run from hasher who plan to go to on-afters, then adjust the reservation then.

  5. The regular hash always run every second Saturday at 2:30PM year round.  If you are setting a long run, and think that an earlier start would be better, especially if safety is involve, let the Hare Raiser know, and he will take it to the Grand Mattress for a decision.

  6. Send all normal hash event information to the On Sec using ContactUs@vh3.ca email address.  If the trail is planned to be wet, challenging, etc., let both the OnSec and the Web Master vh3webmaster@vh3.ca know to ensure that hounds are warned when the notice goes out.  Provide the start location, any special instructions or warnings, the cost if over the normal cost, and the name and location and estimated time of on-afters.

  7. Set the trail using flour.  The Hare must always set the beer check, provide a map or trail for walkers.  See the Trail Marks page for the trail markings we tend to use - you can bring in a new marking but must make sure you explain it before the run starts.  Remember to find a breath-taking view for the beer check.

  8. Then there is the concept of a Live Hare. This is when the trail is set all or partially live (while the hashers are running it). This is sometimes done when a particular part of a trail poses a safety problem, or does not allow for trail marking (e.g. passing through a mall or a construction site). Having the entire run as Live Hare is okay when the Hare is short on time to set the run or enjoys the thrill of being chased. The Hare should always go first, or at least be one of the live hares. At the beginning of the run the Hare will give a map to the walkers and the Religious Advisor will determine the amount of head-start the Hare is given to set trail (e.g. 10-15 minutes). It is a good idea to coordinate a sweeper to stay at the back of the pack to mark out true trail and ensure that no one gets lost (see below). Perhaps as a penalty for not setting a trail, it is tradition for the Live Hare to have his/her shorts pulled down if he/she gets caught, which can be exciting if you're going commando.

  9. The Hare(s) is/are responsible for not losing hounds (runners). At least one Hare should sweep the trail to make sure no hashers are left behind. Safety is always our primary concern,... then there's the beer. If a trail is challenging warn the hounds at the circle. Be prepared to short-cut hashers who are not able to do the challenging parts. Even if a warning was added to the web site and email, the hares may not have read it that closely.

  10. If no Hares have come forward to set a hash the Hare Raiser may choose to have a pickup hash. This is where one person will begin with the flour and a map showing the BC. They will be given a head start similar to a live hare, but if they get caught the person who caught them will become the new Live Hare.
